If you’ve never camped before and you’re not sure where to start, you’re not alone. The “what gear do I need, where do I sleep, where do I shower” question stops most first-timers before they ever leave home. The good news: at River Ranch on the Elk River, you can camp at whatever comfort level you want. From a basic tent site to a 24-person air-conditioned cabin, there’s a setup that takes the guesswork out of your first night outside.

Pick Your Comfort Level First
Most people hear “camping” and picture a tent on the ground. That’s one option, but it’s not the only one. At River Ranch, “camping” can mean any of these:
• Primitive tent site: Just you, your tent, and the ground. Cheapest option. Bring everything.
• Electric tent site: Same as above but with a power hookup for your fan, lights, or coffee maker.
• Full hookup RV site: Water, electric, and sewer for your camper.
• Glamping pod: A very nice tiny cabin with a real bed and a fan. The move for anyone caught between tent camping and a full cabin who wants the best of both.
• Cabin: Air-conditioned, sleeps 2 to 24, real beds, kitchen. Basically a vacation rental on the river.
For a true first-timer, the glamping pod is usually the right call. You get the camping experience (fire pit, picnic table, evening by the river) without having to learn how to pitch a tent in 90-degree heat.
What’s Included vs What to Bring
The general breakdown:
Tent or RV sites include the flat spot, picnic table, fire ring, and access to the bathhouses. You bring everything else: tent or camper, sleeping bag, pillow, cooler, food, cookware.
Glamping pods include the bed with bedding provided, fan, lighting, picnic table, and fire ring. You bring towels and food. That’s it.
Cabins include AC, beds, a kitchen, a bathroom, picnic table, and fire ring. You really just bring food and a swimsuit.
A Typical First Camping Weekend
A normal first-timer’s weekend on the Elk River:
• Friday late afternoon: Arrive, check in at the store, find your site
• Set up: Unload, pop up the tent (about 15 minutes), cooler in the shade
• Evening: Pizza delivered to your site, fire going in the ring, kids running around
• Night: Bed by 10:30, maybe earlier if it’s been a long week
• Saturday morning: Coffee from Elk River Coffee Company at the on-site cafe, breakfast either there or over the fire
• Daytime: Float the river, swim, eat ice cream at Sammy’s Scoops on the way back
• Saturday night: Repeat the campfire routine, sleep better than night one
• Sunday: Slow morning, pack up, drive home
What First-Timers Get Wrong
Wrong
• Bringing too much. You don’t need three changes of clothes per day. Pack light.
• Forgetting bedding. Tent sites don’t come with sheets or sleeping bags. Glamping pods and cabins do.
• Not booking the right site. Shaded sites near the water go first. Book early.
• Underestimating bug spray. It’s the Ozarks. Bring it.

Common Questions
Is it safe?
Yes. River Ranch has been a family campground for over 45 years. The property is well-staffed throughout the season and we know this river better than anyone.
What if it rains?
Glamping pods and cabins are weatherproof, so rain is a non-issue. If you’re a tent camper planning a trip on dates with rain in the forecast, we offer a limited number of covered tent shelter sites with a metal roof over your tent. Book one of those if the forecast looks iffy and you’ll stay dry.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes. River Ranch is pet-friendly across all site types.
Do I need to bring firewood?
No. The store sells firewood and ice, so you don’t have to haul anything in.
The Bottom Line
Your first camping trip doesn’t have to be a survival exercise. Book a glamping pod, pack a cooler and a towel, and let the river do the rest. By Sunday morning you’ll be wondering why you waited this long.
