Real talk from the store: the Elk River is running low right now, and the 8 mile float is closed until levels come back up. That’s the honest version. Here’s the rest of it.
The 5 mile is still on. This stretch runs the deeper parts of the river, so it’s still floating fine even as water drops across the rest. If you’re planning to come down soon, this is what to book.

What’s Actually Happening
Every late summer, the Elk goes through stretches where the water gets low. This is one of those stretches. The 8 mile has sections that are too shallow right now to run safely, so we’ve temporarily closed it. That’s not a call we love making, but it’s the right one.
The 5 mile is a different story. This route sits in the deeper parts of the river, so the water is still holding up. You might hit a minor dragging spot here or there in a raft, but the actual float is still solid.

What Craft to Book for a Low-Water Float
All crafts are still running on the 5 mile: tubes, kayaks, canoes, and rafts.
That said, if you want the smoothest ride right now, kayaks and canoes are the move. They sit lighter on the water and maneuver way better around shallow spots than a raft with a few people in it. Rafts still work fine on most of the 5 mile, they just take a little more steering right now.
A quick guide for what to book while water’s low:
Just want to cool off? Tubes are fine on the 5 mile.
Solo or pair? Kayak. Easiest option in lower water.
Two or three people? Canoe. Maneuverable and traditional.
Family of 4 to 8? Raft still works, expect a spot or two to drag.
Why the 5 Mile Is Still a Great Float
The quiet is the main pitch, but the operational stuff matters too:
Better gravel bar picks. Weekend floaters have to share the popular pull-off spots. Weekday floaters get first pick.
Better cabin availability. Weekend cabins book out weeks or months in advance. Weekday cabins are almost always available, even on short notice.
More staff attention. Fewer guests means more time for questions and generally a more human experience.
When Will the 8 Mile Open Back Up?
That depends on rain. One or two good storm systems and levels will come back up quick. We’re watching it, and we’ll open the 8 mile back up as soon as it’s enjoyable to run.
