If you’ve launched the 8 mile float in the last few summers, there’s a good chance you’ve met Lane Harris. He’s the one running the put-in and making sure everyone’s launch goes smoothly. He’s been doing it for four years. He’s also heading into his senior year of high school this fall.
Here’s a little about who he is and what working at River Ranch actually looks like from his side.
How He Got Here
Lane grew up in Noel, Missouri. So did his older brother Parker, who worked at River Ranch for eight years. Lane saw what that job did for Parker’s work ethic, his confidence, and his ability to handle real responsibility, and he decided to follow the same path.
He applied. He got hired and four years later, he’s coordinating one of the busiest parts of the operation…
What the 8 Mile Coordinator Actually Does
The 8 mile float is a popular route, which means the 8 mile put-in is one of the busiest spots on the river during peak weekends. Lane’s job is to keep that energy from turning into chaos.
That means:
- Checking in groups as they arrive from the shuttle
- Making sure everyone has the right craft, paddles, and life jackets
- Solving the random problems that come up when you put a few hundred people into rafts on a Saturday morning
Lane runs it relaxed but confident. The kind of calm-under-pressure that you really only develop by doing the job for a few summers and figuring out what actually matters.
Why He Stays
What Lane likes about working here isn’t the money or the schedule. It’s that he’s building real work experience in an environment that’s positive and empowering. He’s developing the kind of work ethic, responsibility, and people skills that translate directly into adulthood. He gets to work outside instead of inside. And he meets new people from all over the region every single week.
For a high school kid, that’s a different kind of job than the typical first or second one. You don’t get this kind of leadership experience working a fast food drive-thru.
